BREWTON, AL - D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital Women's Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

"We are very appreciative of the accreditation we have been awarded," said Kathy McGill, radiology manager. "Our staff has worked very hard to bring digital mammography to the Brewton area."

The Women's Center of D.W. McMillan Memorial Hospital was renovated in October 2013. The renovated center includes digital mammography, ultrasound, a modern waiting room and private dressing rooms.

According to the American Cancer Society, one in eight women will get breast cancer in her lifetime. Early detection of breast cancer is the single most important factor to surviving this disease. If the cancer is found early, the five year survival rate is 98 percent.
